about

As I work on finishing my new album, starting next Friday I'll be sharing a new song from it exclusively for subscribers every week until the public release on 11/13. Before I jump into that though, I thought I'd go ALL the way back so some of the very first recordings I ever made for this week's Noisewater Friday Release.

When I was roughly sixteen years old, I recorded an album worth of my own songs as a year-long school project. Without any formal training (or any training at all), it was just a lot of trial and error trying to figure everything out. It's definitely rough around the edges, and I was just learning to sing as well, but for a young teenager writing all of the music and lyrics, playing all of the instruments, and recording everything myself in my bedroom and in my grandparents' basement, it's a nice little time capsule.

It features a couple songs that eventually were re-recorded with LUZER for our debut album ("WhY" and "At This Moment"), along with the opening track which the mouthful-of-an-album-title was originally named after ("Tim Mahoney Volume One: What About Me"), and a closing track that musically I think may hold up the strongest twenty years later, but lyrically dated itself by the time I turned 18 and didn't feel comfortable singing love songs about sixteen year-olds...even if Ringo still sings "You're Sixteen" and KISS plays "Christine Sixteen."

The photo I used on both the original album art and the new 2020 version was taken on stage at a Mahoney Brothers show at Dutch Wonderland, featuring my cousins Maura and Taryn holding their ears as I hit some drums on then guitarist Joe Schwartz's lap.

So before I release my brand new album, here's my "first," previously only released to about a dozen friends in Steinert High School in early 2000, a collection I'm calling "The Sweet 16 Sessions."
